In short
The year at a glance
Niue is one raised coral island, one of the world's smallest countries: no rivers, no runoff, and water clarity that can top 50 metres. Chasms, caves and reef pools stand in for beaches, whales swim within metres of the shore, and the whole place holds fewer than 2,000 people.
May to October is the time: drier, with fresh nights around 20 degrees, and the famous water at its clearest. Humpbacks arrive in July and stay into October, resting so close in that you can watch them from the terrace of a cafe. November to April is hotter and wetter, with March the wettest month and occasional cyclones.
